Cake Decorating Frogs

From LoveToKnow Cake Decorating

When you're considering different types of figures to make for cake decorating, frogs are one of the most fun and creative options. You can use tiny fondant frogs to adorn cupcakes, bake a cake in the shape of a frog, or prepare a sheet cake and decorate it with a frog design.

A cake in the shape of a frog

Before you start, try browsing through some designs of both regular cakes and frog cakes so you can decide what you like best. Make a brief sketch of the design you have in mind, assemble a list of ingredients you'll need, and give yourself plenty of time to bake and decorate the cake before you serve it.

Sheet Cake

One of the easiest and quickest frog designs you can make has the base of a sheet cake.

  1. Prepare and bake one 9-inch by 13-inch sheet cake.
  2. Let the cake cool, and then remove it from the baking pan.
  3. When the cake is completely cooled, transfer it to the refrigerator or freezer to chill for 20 to 30 minutes.
  4. Meanwhile, mix up some buttercream frosting or prepare a can of store-bought frosting for decorating.
  5. Brush the cake free of crumbs, then frost the cake in a color other than green.
  6. Chill the frosted cake again for 20 to 30 minutes.
  7. Outline a frog design on the cake with a round frosting tip using green buttercream frosting.
  8. Fill in the design by spreading more green frosting with a flat spatula.
  9. Decorate the frog with black frosting or small candies.

Shaped Cakes

When you're cake decorating, frogs can also be formed from the shapes of the cakes you create.

Sheet Cake Frog Shape

  1. Bake a flat sheet cake and allow it to cool and chill.
  2. Draw the outline of a large frog shape on a long piece of parchment paper.
  3. Cut out the drawing and place it on top of the chilled cake.
  4. Cut the sides of the cake with a sharp serrated knife so that the cake fits the shape of the frog drawing.
  5. Frost the cake with green buttercream and decorate it to look like a frog.
Use green frosting to decorate a frog cake.

Round Cake Frog Shape

  1. Make enough batter for one layer of an 8-inch or 9-inch round cake and two cupcakes (so you'll need about 1/2 cup of extra batter).
  2. Bake the round cake and cupcakes and let them cool and chill.
  3. Brush the cake free of crumbs and set it on strips of parchment paper on a serving platter.
  4. Frost the cake with green buttercream icing.
  5. Frost the cupcakes with white icing and medium-sized black circles in the white icing, then pipe a green border around each of them.
  6. Position the cupcakes to the upper right and left of the cake, just touching it. They will become the frog's eyes.
  7. Finish decorating the cake with more buttercream or candies. You can add legs to this cake by using mini rectangular cakes made in small loaf pans and then shaped.

Other Shape Cakes

By using special shaped pans designed to create bear or other animal shaped cakes, you can make very fancy frog cakes that look more realistic. These cakes take more time to make and to decorate, so plan ahead accordingly and make sure you have all the equipment you need.

Cake Decorating Frogs

Tiny frogs for cake decorating can be made from fondant or colored marzipan, then dried and placed on a cake as a finishing touch. You can also make a series of small frogs and use them to top cupcakes that are frosted with buttercream or fondant.

To make a fondant frog, knead green gel coloring into a large piece of white fondant until it is completely incorporated. Break off one small piece at a time and use it to mold body parts for your frog. Stick the parts together with sugar syrup or tiny dabs of buttercream, and then add finishing touches with other fondant colors and sculpting tools.
